What is Fool Night about?
Thick clouds have covered the sky for a century, and humanity survives on the little oxygen made by Transfloration, which turns people near death into plants. Toshiro Kamiya, a young man in poverty, must decide whether to keep living as a human or become a plant.
A first collaboration
It is the first collaboration between SUNRISE and SHAFT, a human drama set in a dystopian future that reflects our modern times. It is based on Kasumi Yasuda’s manga, serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior. Netflix says the manga was listed in Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2023 and won Best Suspense Manga at the Japan Expo Awards (Daruma Awards) 2023.

What is Fool Night about?
For a century, thick clouds have blotted out the sun. Earth is trapped in constant winter and night, most plants have withered and oxygen is scarce. Humanity has turned to Transfloration, a technology that implants seeds into the bodies of people near death and turns them into plants, which provide a small amount of oxygen. Toshiro Kamiya lives in poverty, working hard to pay taxes, cover living expenses and afford medication for his mentally ill mother, while the cruel reality around him eats away at his hope. He chooses the path of the “Spiriflor”, the plants humans transform into. Should he keep living as a human being, or cast off his suffering and start a new life as a plant?
